Myofascial release massage (MRM) is an emerging treatment in the medical and massages community and is thought to have immense benefits. Conventional therapy focuses on muscles by seeking to relax and loosen muscles through gentle manipulation and application of pressure. MRM takes this one step further using the theory that muscles and connective tissues store stress and tension. This makes them become locked and stiff, resulting in discomfort and pain. The therapy seeks to relieve this discomfort by stretching.

Nevertheless, most medical practitioners support it due to the existing anecdotal evidence.

Patients who engage in it may also benefit from other forms of noninvasive care which aim to relieve pain and keep joints and muscles warm and loose. It can be used as a complement and precursor to other treatments. These include physical and occupational therapy, manipulation and acupuncture. It can also improve skeletal and muscular alignment before surgery and help athletes align their bodies better before competing in their respective sports.

Myofascial release massage can assist patients prepare for more aggressive strengthening techniques. It can also provide pain relief for those with restricted movement and flexibility. This would allow them return to their normal movements and restore functions.
