Reasons Why Tennessee Marijuana Legalization Should Be Done

By Allyson Burke

People living in Tennessee do not have to wonder why it is illegal to take marijuana. Instead, the government should give reasons why the drug is not legal, but so far the reasons presented are not convincing. All in all, people will always try to overturn the ban as long as they feel it is restrictive to them. Here is an examination of arguments for Tennessee marijuana legalization.

If cannabis was legal, it would probably not be as appealing as it is now. Its illegality makes teenagers try to earn quick money selling it. By legalizing it, the excessive profits made when the drug is sold would be curtailed, denying teens the incentive to be drug dealers. A market for cannabis that is legal and regulated would not only curtail its sale but also its use.

Cannabis is not a destructive drug, at least when compared to others such as tobacco and alcohol. Scientific facts have proven that it is not toxic to human beings, and almost impossible to overdose on it. Additionally, its addictive levels are much lower than that of alcohol and tobacco. It is therefore unfair and unjust for users to be treated more harshly than those who take other drugs.

The reasons put forward to justify cannabis illegality are based on selective distortion of scientific facts. The harm that is said to result from its use is quite exaggerated, with the claims that the drugs makes users mad not being supported by any scientific theories. A majority of such claim stem from ancient prejudices brought forward at a time when scientists did not know how the drugs effects appeared.

Since the cannabinoid receptor system was discovered in the late 1980s, concerns about the dangers of marijuana have not been proven by modern research. One cannot deny the fact that cannabis together with alcohol and tobacco are not to be used by children. However, adults over the last few decades have shown that cannabis can be moderately consumed with no harmful impact to an individual or the society as a whole.

Use of cannabis has positive attributes, like as a recreational drug having mild side effects and its medicinal value. Most people use it because they know what is good for them, especially those suffering from various serious ailments. It provides relief from nausea, pain, spasticity, and other symptoms that have not been successfully treated with convectional medications.

Most grownups in Tennessee feel that cannabis is a more mild and moderate way of relaxing as compared to alcohol. The decision to take the drug is as a result of choice, and this choice is influenced by personal observation. The user observes that its mild side effects and low levels of addiction make it safe to use. Some of the users can tolerate its effects, while those who cannot opt to quit it altogether.

Use of cannabis is due to an informed opinion whereby the user knows it has more benefits than risks. For those living in Tennessee, probably the biggest risk is getting arrested, but the chances of that happening are quite low.

Users have not backed down from their Tennessee marijuana legalization campaign, in spite of the assorted punishments. Their determination is driven by a quest for justice and knowledge of society's fundamental values.
